Reach for the stars. That’s what we want young people from all backgrounds to have the confidence and qualifications to do. It’s why we run a range of educational engagement programmes to encourage them to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects at school and university.
Through school visits by Inmarsat representatives and Insights days at our London HQ for primary schools, secondary schools and youth organisations, we seek to capture their imagination early. For 14-17 year-olds there’s the chance of meaningful work experience, while our annual eight-week Inmarsat Strategy Challenge enables sixth form students to gain invaluable knowledge from our experts and research their ideas. To date, candidates have investigated topics including the future of aviation connectivity; how to address the digital divide in less developed parts of the world; and satellite connectivity’s role in disaster relief. Taking part in the challenge has helped students gain places in top tier universities.
We acknowledge the importance of closing gaps, and in education and early careers that specifically includes a commitment to those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
COVID-19 has impacted on the opportunities we have been able to offer throughout 2020 and we have had to pause a number of activities or move them online.
